“Style is knowing who you are, what to say, and not giving a damn.” —Gore Vidal
No one is born stylish; not even Audrey Hepburn. And no writer, designer, painter, filmmaker, performer, or composer was born with an immediate sense of their creative style either.
How to find it? It’s hard to say which of these three parts is hardest.
It can take decades of living to figure out who you are.
It can take a career of experience to figure out what to say.
It can take a lifetime to override our hardwired need for social approval and stop caring about what others think.
Or, it could happen in an instant of clarity: that this is who you are, this is what you have to say, and by George (and Martha), you’ll do as you please.
But make no mistake. In a way, you will have been preparing your entire life for that breakthrough to emerge.
